"Patti Millington's poignant confabulations systematically transport us within and without, back and forth from a place she has simultaneously discovered and invented."

- Reid Mackenzie, HI Art Magazine

The frictional journey of illustrator’s pencil across paper leaves a trail to follow in much the manner a burnt stick clutched in the hand of a distant ancestor might once have deposited charcoal upon a cave wall, remnant of an artist’s vision of a world now past. The sculptor’s hand imprints clay vessel, totem or figure as our feet have indented earth since the time we first swung down from the canopy. Aesthetic realities created within a computer, however face a unique challenge.

The creations of digital artists emerge in the ether of electrons through analog–more the hand of magician than artist–conjuring permutation, transformation and alternate dimensions of image into being. Summoning fields of color into existence, or appropriating icons from a thousand years of human art making into the hands of a virtual creator the digital artist becomes liberated from the traditions of mechanical mark making.

Free in a way uniquely devoid of historically referenced process, computer generated images are equally devoid of those orienting mnemonics which resonate within the viewer of traditional media, creating familiarity and accessibility within ever-changing expressions. Instigated in the abstract environs of a virtual world absent of physical touch, digital art once delivered into the world of highly physical objects, is often a stillborn progeny of mind which fails to breathe once the electronic umbilicus is severed; a dismembered modality seeking a medium.
Patti Millington weaves the mitochondria of digital generation into the field of familiar found objects. Imbuing a sense of antiquity into that which never before existed, confabulations of memory distilled through time are repatriated, transformed and reinterpreted. Suspending subjects in lucid constructions–frameworks familiar as those which might support canvas–Patti recreates the device of memory in ghostly image of our emergent existence.

Absent of mimicry of touch, or the impression of brush, Patti’s works bring physicality to the digital medium; an interface with mind incarnated in object. Introverted worlds, ulterior realities, and motivated mnemonics, resonate in echoes of the not-quite-remembered, finding form in would-be icons of a mythic age where novel invention imprints directly upon the retina. Patti’s art provides the “strange room” into which we venture to find who we might be, imagined or real; a dimension in which the past and present coexist within that immense network which has conjured the collective unconscious into cogent experience.
